It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 that Roger of Poitou held 54 Manors in Suffolk. Roger was Lord of Woodbridge in 1086 and also Tenant-in-chief. He was the fourth son of Roger de Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and Mabel de Bellême. Roger de Montgomery was one of William the Conqueror’s principal counsellors. He was the grandnephew of the Duchess Gunnor, wife of Duke Robert I of Normandy. Roger, along with his brothers, was a supporter of Robert Curthose in his conflicts with Henry I of England. After their failed rebellion of 1102, they lost their English holdings and were sent into exile.

According to Master Wace – “Roger had a hand to hand encounter with one of the Saxon army. An English knight, wielding a large hatchet, with the blade a full foot long, came bounding on with many Normans falling before him. He rushed with his lance set, and heeding not the long-handled axe, struck him down. Then Roger cried out, ‘Frenchmen strike! The Day is ours!'”
